Understanding the London, Ontario Pool Enclosure By-Law
When planning a pool fence in London, Ontario, you cannot just install any standard privacy fence. The City of London takes pool safety very seriously. If your pool has a depth of more than 75 cm (29.5 inches) and a surface area greater than 1 square metre, you are legally required to obtain a pool fence permit and meet specific structural criteria.

Minimum Height Requirements: The fence must be a minimum of 153 cm (60 inches or 5 feet) high from the ground.

Non-Climbable Design: To prevent unauthorized entry, horizontal structural members (like fence rails) must be located on the inside of the pool enclosure. If they must be on the outside, they have to be spaced far enough apart to prevent them from being used as a ladder.

Restricted Openings: Gaps between vertical boards or pickets cannot allow a spherical object larger than 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) to pass through, ensuring small children cannot squeeze through the fence.
